Mike is NBP’s managing partner and a seasoned trial lawyer who represents businesses and individuals in complex litigation and investigations throughout the country. With over 30 years of experience in virtually all aspects of civil and criminal litigation, Mike is a go-to lawyer for intricate commercial disputes, financial fraud recovery, investment banking and private equity related litigation, alternative investment and hedge fund disputes, employment cases, complex and catastrophic tort matters, and white-collar criminal investigations. With experience spanning a vast array of industries, Mike’s practice routinely involves unique legal issues, complex statutes, and claims of first impression.
Mike has argued before the United States Courts of Appeals, the Delaware Supreme Court, and various appellate courts. In addition to his trial work, Mike provides sage counsel to C-Suite executives, governmental leaders, non-profits, and high-profile individuals on litigation avoidance, conducts the most sensitive internal investigations, and is adept and managing crises and problems that appear insurmountable.
Mike’s white collar defense experience also includes defending companies in connection with two of New England’s largest health care investigations, the nation’s first investigation of “asset search companies,” and advising companies on issues relating to the Transportation Security Administration, Homeland Security, and the Trading with the Enemy Act. Mike has represented individuals and corporations in grand jury investigations involving issues as diverse as Medicare fraud, academic research improprieties, the Big Dig, tax evasion and fraud. Mike has also successfully defended executives and corporations in criminal prosecutions, qui tam and False Claims matters.
Mike has served as lead trial counsel in several high-profile cases including an action brought against the American Automobile Association in a case of first impression regarding the duty of AAA to provide emergency road services and AAA’s advertising practices. Mike also represented the family of the victim of one of Boston’s most notorious murders in a case against the owner of the gun that the assailant took and used as the murder weapon. It was one of numerous instances when Mike counselled families who have lost loved ones to violence.
Mike’s approach to his clients reflects his extensive experience in the courtroom, in the C-Suite, with government and with individuals in some of their worst moments. He listens as carefully as he does compassionately. Mike is a past recipient of the prestigious Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court’s “Adams Pro Bono Publico Award,” recognizing his pro bono contributions throughout his career.
Mike is graduate of Northeastern University School of Law and received his B.S., magna cum laude, from American University. Prior to founding Nystrom Beckman & Paris, LLP, Mike was a partner at the international law firm of Brown Rudnick LLP, where he practiced civil and criminal litigation.
Mike is a member of the Massachusetts and Boston Bar Associations. He is also admitted to the courts of Massachusetts, United States District Court for the District of Massachusetts, First Circuit Court of Appeals, and the United States Supreme Court. And Mike has been admitted pro hac vice in more than a dozen different states. He has appeared in FINRA and the American Arbitration Association proceedings in major cities throughout the United States.
